Deodorant

The concept of deodorizing the body has existed for thousands of years, long before commercial products appeared. In ancient civilizations such as Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, and Rome, people used natural fragrances and oils to mask body odor, applying scented balms and aromatic resins after bathing. Minerals like alum, a naturally occurring salt with antibacterial properties, were used in parts of Europe and Asia to inhibit odor-causing bacteria, functioning as one of the earliest forms of natural deodorant. Across cultures, other handmade methods included herbal pastes, clays, vinegar, and plant extracts, reflecting humanity’s early understanding of nature as a source for personal hygiene. These practices were primarily crafted by hand, using ingredients readily available in their environment.

With the advent of industrialization in the 19th century, deodorant began to transition from homemade remedies to commercially produced products. The first modern deodorant, Mum, was introduced in 1888 as a waxy cream applied by hand to reduce underarm odor. Early 20th-century developments saw the rise of antiperspirants using aluminum salts, which worked by blocking sweat glands, and by the 1950s, the roll-on applicator made deodorants easier to use. Despite these innovations, many people continued to seek natural alternatives due to concerns about chemical additives and skin sensitivity. Handmade solutions, such as powders of baking soda or clay, herbal pastes, and mineral-based sticks, persisted as simple, ingredient-focused ways to control odor.


In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, interest in handmade and natural deodorants experienced a revival. Growing awareness of synthetic chemicals, such as parabens and aluminum, spurred consumers to return to natural formulations. Today, the handmade deodorant movement emphasizes transparency, skin-friendly ingredients, and environmental responsibility, with some products now being fully compostable or offered in refillable containers.
